A breeder should be the puppy's first teacher. The Shar-Pei pup gets to know the world by means of socialization. General behavioral pattern and a set of reactions are largely predetermined by the breeder's knowledge and experience in early socializing. Shar-Peis will by all means require attention and time. Therefore, honesty with both self and the puppy must be given. Is there enough time to devote to him or will the puppy become a source of distraction and constant irritation? A responsible breeder will take time to give a general idea of the breed and will never insist upon buying the puppy. Moreover, he is likely to persuade against buying a Shar-Pei, if he sees, that serious problems may crop up. Shar-Peis need training to learn to hold back their natural instincts.
